Skincare for Beginners: A No-Stress Routine You Can Start Today π
But honestly? You don't need all that.
If you're a beginner, the best skincare routine is simple, affordable, and consistent. So instead of confusing you with 20 products, here's a routine that every beginner can follow-no stress, no fancy ingredients, no drama.
1. Cleanser - The product you'll use twice a everyday (morning & night)
If you do only one thing correctly in skincare, let it be cleansing. A good cleanser removes sweat, dirt, sunscreen, and excess oil without stripping your skin's natural oils. Your skin should feel clean but not tight.
So what to use?
• Dry/Sensitive skin: Cream or milky cleansers
• Oily/Acne-prone skin: Gel/foaming cleansers
• Normal skin: Anything gentle works
2. Moisturizer - Your skin's best friend
A moisturizer is not optional. Even oily skin needs hydration. The right moisturizer keeps your skin soft, prevents dryness, and strengthens your skin barrier, making your skin healthier. The key is the find the product that suits your skin type perfectly. Here's how you can find the perfect moisturizer :
• Dry skin: Thick creams
• Oily skin: Lightweight gel creams
• Sensitive skin: Fragrance-free, simple formulas
• Normal Skin: Anything gentle works, I would recommend lightweight, moisturizing creams
3. Sunscreen - The real anti-aging product
If you're skipping sunscreen, you're basically undoing all your skincare. Sunscreen protects your skin from UV rays that cause tanning, pigmentation, wrinkles, and even acne worsening.
• The rule: Use sunscreen every day, even indoors, even if it's cloudy.
• How much to apply:
2 fingers worth.
Reapply your sunscreen every 3-4 hours, use a sunstick for reapplying since it's better when you're outside and have makeup on.
• Tip: Find a sunscreen that you like. That's the only way you'll actually use it.
Remember being consistent with this routine is the key. It's better to spend money on few products than trying out a different product everytime.
4. Optional Step: A Serum (only if you want to level up)
You don't need serums on day one. But if you want to try:
Niacinamide → for glow and oil control
Vitamin C → for brightening
Hyaluronic Acid → for hydration and plump face
Salicylic Acid → for acne
Retinol → anti-aging (only for later, not beginners, start in your mind 20's)
Azelic Acid →Treats acne, rosacea, reduces redness
Start with just one serum. Don't mix everything like a chemist. It'll have more side effects than good results.
• A simple beginner routine (that works for everyone
Morning Routine
1. Cleanser
2. Moisturizer
3. Sunscreen
Night Routine
1. Cleanser
2. Moisturizer
3. Optional: 1 serum (2-3 times a week)
That's it. Three steps. No overthinking. Just trust the process.
Common mistakes beginners make
1. Using too many products
2. Trying 10 hacks that you see in TikTok, Instagram
3. Expecting instant results
4. Over-exfoliating
5. Not using sunscreen
6. Switching products too quickly (give everything at least 4-6 weeks)
7. Following these steps whenever you feel like and not doing it everyday consistently
• Your skin needs consistency more than it needs expensive products.
How long it takes to see results
Hydration → 1 week
Glow → 2-3 weeks
Acne reduction → 4-6 weeks
Pigmentation → 6-12 weeks
Barrier repair → 2-8 weeks
Slow progress is still progress.
Final Thoughts
Skincare isn't about perfection. It's just basic hygiene and a little self-care and confident booster. Start with the essentials. Build slowly. Be patient with your skin. Once you get comfortable, you can try actives, masks, exfoliants, and more-but only when you feel ready. Your skin doesn't need a lot to look good. It just needs the right things done consistently.
